We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Finance Officer to join our team. You will work at our offices in Sandy Hill 32.5 hours per week and report to the Executive Director. You will be responsible for the organization’s financial management and ensure that the organization’s financial systems meet best practices.
 
With a staff team of 15 people, we offer over 20 different services in five programs, and serve children, parents, caregivers and professionals who work with children. Our focus is early learning, parent support, training, research and building community capacity within the early years sector.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
The Finance Officer is responsible for:
  • day to day financial operations (i.e. accounts payable, accounts receivable, issuing receipts, banking, petty cash, etc.)
  • preparing and analyzing monthly financial statements
  • analyzing GL accounts and prepares adjusting entries
  • the organization’s payroll system, including bi-monthly pay, ROEs and T4s
  • managing the employee benefit program
  • maintaining all financial management systems, including backups
  • gaining an understanding of all funding contracts and service agreements
  • preparing and monitoring cash flow forecasts,
  • preparing program expense allocation (i.e. fund accounting)
  • presenting financial reports to the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee
  • preparing budgets for approval and subsequent monitoring
  • preparing monthly bank and credit card reconciliations
  • preparing and filing all tax returns (e.g. GST/HST, EHT, T3010)
  • manages the financial elements of PRC events
  • contributing to the creation of finance policies and procedures
  • supporting the annual financial statement audit (i.e. working papers, reconciliations, etc.) and working closely with the external audit team
 
Other Duties
  • maintaining a calendar of due dates for all funder reports
  • assisting with purchasing and supplier relationships, when required
  • preparing the agenda and minutes for the Finance Committee
  • assisting with the preparation of the Annual General Report
 
Knowledge and abilities:
  • Working knowledge of Canadian GAAP
  • Experience in developing and implementing effective internal controls
  • Experience working with fund accounting
  • Strong working knowledge of payroll processes
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Able to work as a part of a team as well as independently
  • Exceptional organizational, time management and prioritizing skills
  • Demonstrate sound work ethics, flexible, honest, trustworthy and respectful
  • Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail
 
Qualifications:
  • College diploma or university degree in business or commerce
  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience
  • Advanced experience with Excel
  • Experience with Sage is desirable
  • Proficiency in both official languages is considered an asset
