Award Winners

THE PAUL D. STEINHAUER ADVOCACY AWARD

Purpose 

This award is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Paul D. Steinhauer and will be presented annually to a member of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry who has been an exceptional advocate for children, adolescents and their families at the regional, national, and international level.

Nomination

The nominees and the nominators must be members in good standing of the CACAP.
The nomination must include a statement by the nominator (no more than 500 words) outlining the individual's contribution to advocating for children, adolescents and their families, and can be accompanied by supporting documentation illustrating or describing the nature of the nominee's contribution.
 
Nominations must be received by June 30. They will be kept in a pool of applicants for two years. This award will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Academy. The recipient will be asked to publish an account of their work in the Journal of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Adjudication
 
The Awards Chair will strike a Committee of five members of the CACAP, one of whom will be Chair of the CACAP Education Committee and another, a member of the Advocacy Committee. This Committee will choose the recipient by consensus from among the nominations received in the last two years and submit the nomination to the Board of Directors.

Recognition
 
The recipient will receive a cheque for $500.00 and a suitably inscribed plaque. The CACAP will publish the name of the recipient in Journal of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and maintain a record of all recipients at the National Office.
 
 

THE NAOMI RAE-GRANT AWARD

Purpose

This award is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Naomi Rae-Grant and is presented annually to a member of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CACAP) who is a resident, fellow, or consultant who has done creative, innovative, seminal work on an aspect of community intervention, consultation, or prevention.

Nomination

The nomination must include a statement (no more than 500 words) concerning the individual's contribution to community intervention, consultation, or prevention and be accompanied by supporting documentation illustrating or describing the nature of the nominee's contribution.
The nominees and the nominators must be members in good standing of the CACAP.
Nominations must be received by June 30 of each year and will be kept in a pool of applicants for two years. Awards will be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Academy and the recipient will be notified in advance so that he/she may be able to attend.

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARD

Purpose 
This award will be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CACAP) to a psychiatric educator who has made a significant contribution in undergraduate, postgraduate, continuing professional education or public education in child and adolescent mental health.
 
Nomination
 
The nomination must include a statement by the nominator (no more than 500 words) concerning the individual's contribution to education in child and adolescent mental health and be accompanied by supporting documentation illustrating or describing the nature of the nominee's contribution.  The nominee and nominator must be a member in good standing of the CACAP.
 
Nominations must be received by June 30 of each year and will be kept in a pool of applicants for two years. This award will be presented at the Annual General Meeting of the Academy. The recipient will be notified in advance so that he/she may be able to attend.

THE CERTIFICATE OF SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Purpose 
This certificate is designed to recognize a person or an organization that has made outstanding contributions and provided important leadership in the field of child and adolescent mental health.
 
Nomination
 
The contribution must include a statement by the CACAP nominator (no more than 500 words) outlining the individual's or organization's outstanding contributions and leadership in the field of children's mental health. Supporting documentation illustrating or describing the nature of the nominee's contributions and leadership role is necessary.
 
Nominations must be received by June 30 of each year and will be kept in the pool of applicants for two years. Award winner will be recognized at the Annual General Meeting of the Academy and will be asked to publish an account of his or her work in the CACAP Review.

The recipient will receive a framed certificate of Special Recognition signed by the President of the Academy. The CACAP will also publish the name of the recipient in the CACAP Review, and maintain a record of all recipients at the National Office.

MEMBER-IN-TRAINING TRAVEL BURSARIES 

Purpose

• Have an oral session or poster accepted for presentation at the Annual Meeting;
• Are first author (poster), co-presenter (workshop), or speaker (symposium);
• Are not receiving any industry support.

The Annual Meeting Awards for Scientific Presentations

All awards will be presented each year at the CACAP annual meeting.

 
SCIENTIFIC PRESENTATION AWARDS
 
Purpose
 
To recognize and promote the highest quality of presentations at the Annual Meeting, the CACAP may present the following oral and poster awards:

Four Best Oral Presentation Awards presented in the following categories:

• Dalhousie Award (full member certified more than five years)
• Early Career Award (member certified less than five years)
• Affiliate Early Career Investigator Award (for non-MD researchers in child and adolescent psychiatry who are either members-in-training or have been certified for less than 5 years)
• Member-in-Training Award

Four Best Poster Presentation Awards presented in the following categories:

• Full Member Award (full member certified more than five years)
• Early Career Award (member certified less than five years)
• Affiliate Early Career Investigator Award (for non-MD researchers in child and adolescent psychiatry who are either members-in-training or have been certified for less than 5 years)
• Member-in-Training Award

One Early Career Community Intervention/Access to Care Award

• oral presentation or poster by member certified less than five years

Awards are intended to recognize outstanding work. Therefore, each award is not necessarily awarded every year.

Eligibility

General Requirements

• Members must be in good standing with the CACAP.
• The presenter speaks clearly, is concise and delivers a high-quality presentation.
• Throughout the presentation and during the question period, the presenter appears knowledgeable about the work and its relationship to current literature on the topic.
• In order for an oral or poster presentation to be considered for an award, it must present original research relevant to child psychiatry, and conclusions must be based on an accurate interpretation of the presented data, including appropriate acknowledgement of methodological limitations.

Best Scientific Oral Presentation

In addition to the criteria mentioned above under general eligibility, the following criteria apply:

• Trainees must be in training or have recently completed their training at an accredited educational institution with their work being completed during their traineeship.
• Presenters must be the first authors of the work, which in large part will have been designed, conducted, and analyzed by them.

Best Scientific Poster Presentation

In addition to the criteria mentioned above under general eligibility and best oral presentation, the following criteria apply:

• The presenter must be present for the poster session.
• The presenter answers questions appropriately and demonstrates a high level of understanding of the research material and the relevant literature.
• There shall be a visual balance between text, figures, and tables.

Adjudication

Prior to the start of the meeting, the Chair of the Research and Scientific Program Committee (RSPC) shall identify eligible presentations from the abstracts and shall assign two assessors to each of the oral presentations and two assessors to each of the poster presentations. Assessors shall privately identify any potential conflict of interest to the RSPC Chair. They shall independently assess the presentations, shall complete the marking sheets as provided and submit them to the RSPC Chair.

The collated results will be discussed with the Chair of the Awards Committee, following which the decision on the Awards will be made. The Awards shall be presented at the Awards ceremony on day 3 of the Annual Meeting.

Recognition

The Chair of the Awards Committee will announce the winners of the Awards at the Annual General Meeting.

The winner of each award will be given a certificate of the award and a cash prize of $500.00
