Research on Local Child Outcomes (e.g Early Development Instrument)
How well children are prepared for school is directly related to their early experiences and impacts their later overall success in school and in life.
The Early Development Instrument (EDI) measures children's developmental health at school entry and was created by Dr. Dan Offord and Dr. Magdalena Janus of the Offord Centre for Child Studies at McMaster University. The EDI is a 103-item checklist that is completed by Senior Kindergarten teachers for each child in their class and measures overall developmental health. Although it is completed for individual children, the EDI is a population-based measure and is not a diagnostic tool nor is it an indication of a school's performance.
The DACs present EDI results, in conjunction with other relevant data (e.g. Social Determinants of Health), to local school boards, community partners and professionals. The purpose of these workshops and presentations is to facilitate and support evidence-informed planning. The results of the EDI, in combination with other local data are meant to help inform communities about the development of their young children so that they may provide the supports necessary for healthy child development.
The Data Analysis Coordinators (DACs) also analyze, map and report on local EDI results. The EDI reports for the past cycles can be found in the table below.
Individual Community EDI results from cycle 3 for the Eastern Ontario Region are available on the Community Profiles page.
