A Letter To Passionate Kids From Big Time Radio ( Ronnie Stacks )
Dear Kids,
I’ve always said music is the paste that keeps we the people together. You can actually verify this all the way back to the Dark Ages when the natives of the land would sit around fires humming and banging sticks or rocks together to produce a “beat” or sound to please themselves, their neighbors or their Gods in celebration. Since then music has become so powerful that one can just listen to a song and begin to feel excitement, sadness, joyfulness or happiness.
My three brothers and I grew up in the projects of Tuscaloosa, Alabama with our mom who was single. We were always in the street playing baseball, at the courts playing basketball or in a field playing “kick pin”. Back in these days there were no boom boxes, mobile headphones or Walkman’s. Regardless of where we were it was all about where we ended up and we normally ended up back at someone’s house listening to R&B or Motown music. That’s right, the Shi-Lites, The Commodores, Al Green, The Jackson Fives, Teddy Pendergrass, Barry White, The Temptations, The O’Jays, The Pointer Sisters and many more. So, can you imagine four little boys in the projects shaking their booty and belting out the words to these wonderful artists, along with our friends. You see, although our cultures were different music brought us together and since we were young this music stuck with us all of our lives.
In the late 70’s we were able to move out of the projects near the college campus of the University of Alabama. While here, our musical horizons changed with our environment. We were so near to the college campuses that we could walk across a park and be at many of the sorority houses and dorms that housed these students. On the weekends, these students would hire bands to come and play and we’d be near enough to see them and hear them. Music touched our souls. We were close enough to see them and hear them as they played their original music. At the time, Air Supply, John Denver, Christopher Cross, Eddie Money, Kris Kristofferson, Queen, Wild Cherry, The Bee Gees, Blondie, Lynard Skynard, CCR,The Village People, Hall and Oates and ABBA were many favorites that we heard and learned about.
In the 80s, I moved out to West Texas to live with my dad. My goodness was I in for a surprise. In walks country music into my life. I was in a boot, Wranglers and cowboy hat kind of country. I was called a “city slicker” because I had no idea what country music was all about.
My dad sat around listening to the Golden oldies or country greats Tanya Tucker, Patsy
Cline, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Charlie Pride, Conway Twittee and Ray Price.
Me, I was in high school and learning about The Belamy Brothers, TG Shepard, George Straight, Joe Diffee, Reba, Dolly Parton, Randy Travis, Garth Brooks, KennyRogers, Vince Gill, Alan Jackson, and Crystal Gayle.
Many years have passed since then and I still love music. Now I get to watch my children grow up and hear the music that they like. Yeah, it’s not the same but I know deep down inside of them that music has an effect on them just like it did for me.
I’ve actually watched my daughter Phoebe (9) cry listening to a song and my son (11) he is more into upbeat songs that make him throw the air drum sticks against the back of the truck seat while shaking his head “from side to side”
You do not have to be able to sing or play an instrument in order to be involved in music. There are so many other jobs in music such as; engineering music, promotion of artists and music, merchandising, distribution, music and artists management, venue promotion, label management, marketing, and much more. Let music take you where it leads you. Of course, I never had intentions of running a radio station or even talking to a country music star but now I am able to run a radio station and I’m almost ready to talk to my first country star. Good Luck!!
Sincerely,
Ronnie Sparks
