Biography

Dear Parents:

Whatever your child is passionate about, I hope you encourage them to do that thing. For me, my passion was always music, and specifically writing music. I wrote a piece of music for my 7th grade band to play when I was a kid, and my band director let me bring it in for the band to read. I’ll never forget that, and to this day I remain passionate about creating music and hearing it get performed. I’ve been very lucky to have a very supportive family and teachers who have encouraged me to pursue my passion, and because of that my passion is now my life.

Today, I write lots of different kinds of music, but I especially love writing music for jazz band. I direct my own jazz band (Heisenberg Uncertainty Players), and I write new music for that group all the time. I love creating my own original music for that group, but I also like arranging rock songs so that they resemble the original music yet sound completely different. I have also finished a new piece for the band called “We Tear Down Our Coliseums”, where different parts of the piece represent different baseball stadiums that have been torn down. This combines my passion for music with one of my other great passions – baseball!

All of these fun things I’m doing now are because I had great role models when I was younger. Every kid has a passion for something, and the best thing an adult can do for a child is to encourage them to pursue their passion and facilitate their ability to accomplish their goals. If your child is passionate about music, play them great music, take them to see concerts, and encourage them to create their own. Let them do what they love, and they’ll love what they do.

Sincerely,

-John Dorhauer
