HERE IS HER LETTER TO PASSIONATE KIDS & ALL THE KIDS OF HER FAMILY & FRIENDS
If I had a wish for each of you reading my story, it would be for you to know that each of you are special and unique. If I could speak with each of you, and I really wish I could, I would convince you that you are important to me and to this world. Trust me, I understand and know exactly what you will face and many of the emotions you will encounter while you are growing up. I just turned 18, so I’m still trying to figure it all out just like you, but I can share with you what I have learned along the way so far.
While you are growing up there will be MANY choices for you to make. Those are your decisions, but one of the most important things to remember is to stay true to yourself and always be kind. Accept who you are. I was a quirky kid, so one of my biggest lessons was that once I became secure with myself others were as well. Definitely define your own normal. If you define your own “norm” based on your own standards and comfort zone without wavering, people will not only accept you, they will admire you for it. Above all else, be kind. I was taught that you do not always have to be everyone’s best friend, but it is not our place to cast judgment. It is our place to be caring and helpful. Really think about how you want to be remembered, because there is definite truth in the Maya Angelou quote that says “people will forget what you said; people will forget what you did; but they will never forget how you made them feel”.
Make the effort to discover where you fit in, who you are comfortable with and have some kind of personal escape. For me it was music. Others may find their diversion in sports, hiking or other activities. Do something that gives you inner peace and makes you smile. Find a place where you can be silly and don't grow up too fast. Also, find someone trusted you can talk to about everything. For me that was my Mom, my grandparents and my best friend Emily. Having just one person supporting you can make all of the difference.
If you have the opportunity to attend camps and events where you can meet new people take it! My Mom always encouraged me to participate in groups that provided me with other friends that weren’t connected to my school. I went to out of state acting, dancing, music and modeling events for fun and that is the very reason I am where I am with my music today. Interacting with different personalities from all over the country at these events also taught me that the world is very large and there is definitely a place in it for everyone. Remember we live in a world that puts lots of pressures on us, but the ones who stand out are the ones who dare to be different. Your path may seem harder than others but remember, it is always your choice how you walk on your path. If you cave to outside pressures then you are walking a path that someone else is designing for you. And I ask you, are the people you are trusting to design your life selfless enough to make the decisions that are best for you? When faced with something that is blocking your path always remember, there are many ways to get around that obstacle. Choose the way that fits your strengths, ethics and goals because in the end it doesn’t matter how you got there, it just matters that you got to the other side. Love Danielle Haskel
